Times Square Arts and the Cuban Artists Fund presented an artist respected for her play between body and restriction, Aimée García Marrero. Her public art installation Times of Silence exposed the news of our day, printed and public as the body, delicately restrained by colorful hand-embroidery at the Broadway plaza between 42nd and 43rd Streets from April 29 – May 18, 2016. An unveiling took place on Friday, April 29th at 11:00 am.The project consisted of 6 panels of collaged newspaper and embroidery threads mounted in three metal illuminated vitrines. Through this sculptural form, the viewer sees the evidence of controlled communication of national press – either as a statement of silence or as an aesthetic composition of color and form, where the viewer can choose to write an alternative daily journal. Combining New York Times and Cuban papers, Marrero demonstrated that news is always slightly opaque and interpretative. The Selection Committee includes: Alexandre Arrechea, Times Square Arts commissioned artist; Holly Block, Executive Director, Bronx Museum of the Arts; Juan Delgado, Curator; Sherry Dobbin, Director, Times Square Arts/Creative Director, Times Square Alliance; Alina Pedroso, Cuban Artists Fund Advisory Committee; Jose Parla, Artist; Carlos Pomares, Executive Director, Cuban Artists Fund; Tim Tompkins, President, Times Square Alliance; and Helen Toomer, Director, PULSE NYC.Previous artists include: Arlés del Rio, Esterio Segura, Leslie Sardiñas, Sofia Maldonado and Alexandre Arrechea. This collaboration was made possible through generous support from The Rockefeller Brothers Fund.#SilenceTSqPhotographs courtesy of Sara Kerens for @TSqArts.
