At peak hours of the day, Times Square is so congested that many people are forced to walk in the streets to compete with traffic. One of the ways that the Alliance keeps track of the pedestrian conditions in and around the Times Square Bowtie is by counting the number of people who come through the Bowtie (Broadway and Seventh Ave between 42nd-47th Streets) on a given day. In December 2009, a count by Philip Habib & Associates recorded 364,000 pedestrians in a 24-hour period, a 15% increase from 2008.
