ROMANCE HEATS-UP IN TIMES SQUARE ON VALENTINE’S DAY
Couples Can Renew Their Vows on the Red Steps, Share Their Love Story Inside the BRIDES Magazine Love Truck, and Help Make a 10-Foot Tall Interactive Heart Sculpture Glow
NEW YORK – January 30, 2012 – This Valentine’s Day, thousands of New Yorkers and tourists looking for romance in the big city need to look no further than the Crossroads of the World. For the first time, the Times Square Alliance will celebrate love with a Valentine’s Day vow renewal ceremony at the iconic Red Steps for all couples. Visitors can step inside the BRIDES Love Truck to share their love story, and they can also help make a 10-foot tall red heart sculpture glow brighter.
All couples, whether they have been married a few months or fifty years, are invited to say “I do” again at the Crossroads of the World. Sweethearts from across the river and around the globe can celebrate their passion and declare their love by renewing their vows on the Red Steps in the heart of Times Square. Captain Arnold, a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain and wedding Officiant, will lead the 6 p.m. ceremony, which will be broadcast live in Times Square on the American Eagle Times Square Digital Billboard and webcast live at TimesSquareNYC.org. Participating couples will also have a chance to win a second honeymoon to Antigua by sharing their story of why they most deserve a second honeymoon. The prize package includes air transportation for two courtesy of American Airlines, and a four-night stay at the luxury resort Carlisle Bay. To pre-register for this free event, find out more details including how to enter the Times Square Vow Renewal Contest and the official rules, visit www.TimesSquareNYC.org.
“This Valentine’s Day, Times Square is the destination for love,” said Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance. “For the first time, we’re inviting couples from across America and New York to come to Times Square to publicly renew their vows and spend a romantic evening going to dinner and a Broadway show in Times Square. They can also share their personal love stories with BRIDES and declare their love in front of the romantic “BIG♥NYC” sculpture.”
New this year, the BRIDES “Declare Your Love” Truck will be stationed in the heart of Times Square from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Visitors will be encouraged to step inside the Love Truck and share their personal stories and lessons of love, which will be streamed live on brides.com/love. The BRIDES “Love Truck” will also offer hot chocolate and the chance to win diamond necklaces, earrings, and watches from jcpenney by drawing flowers.
Over the last four years, Times Square has hosted an annual heart sculpture to celebrate Valentine’s Day, selecting a special architect to design a romantic public art installation in Times Square for all to enjoy. This year’s 2012 Times Square Valentine heart sculpture is “BIG♥NYC” by BIG, which utilizes the flow of people, air and touch to bring its heart to life.
The 10-foot tall glowing sculpture will be on display on Duffy Square from February 6 –29 and consists of 400 transparent, LED lit, acrylic tubes that form a cube around a suspended red heart. The transparent tubes refract the lights of Times Square, creating a cluster of condensed city lights around the heart. As people touch a hand-shaped sensor in front of the sculpture, the heart will glow brighter as the energy from their hands is converted into more light. The heart will glow brighter and beat faster as more people interact with it.
As an added feature, when visitors take photo of themselves next to the “BIG♥NYC” sculpture and post it on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/MyThinkEnergy, Think Energy will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to the Hope & Heroes Children’s Cancer Fund.
These romantic activities kick-off “Free Love in Times Square” -- a promotion throughout the month of February filled with steamy offers, special shows, and romantic deals designed to keep love hot during the cold winter months. With discounted tickets, special menus and weekend getaway packages to fit any budget, Broadway shows, restaurants, and hotels throughout Times Square are making it easy to keep love alive.
