Public Space Projects

Better Public Spaces: Enhancing the Pedestrian Experience
Public spaces can be boisterous or serene, large or small, but are all created for the use and enjoyment of the public. In Times Square, the public spaces are not only an ever-changing theatre set for exhibiting creativity, but they are also usable spaces for pedestrians. In order to improve upon and enhance these spaces, the Alliance has created Design Times Square, Art Times Square, the Mid-Block Passageways Plan and Problems and Possibilities, a plan for improving the street level experience. The Alliance's public space programs are aimed at reducing pedestrian congestion, improving private-sector design and exhibiting exciting temporary public art - reinforcing Times Square's status as the Crossroads of the World.

Design Times Square
Think you've got an "eye" for top-notch visual style? The Times Square Alliance invites you to vote on your favorite Times Square architecture and design. Our expert panel of architects, designers and planners has reviewed almost 150 sites in the heart of Manhattan - including office towers, public spaces, storefronts, churches, theatres, restaurants, public art and illuminated signage - nominating the sites that best exemplify the neighborhood's creativity and energy.

Duffy Square Renovation

Creating a World-Class Public Space in the Center of Times Square

This ambitious plan calls for the physical redesign of Duffy Square, located in the heart of Times Square and home to the popular TKTS booth. Once completed, this space will not only enhance Times Square's attractiveness, but will also dramatically improve the area's pedestrian environment.

Mid-Block Passageways Plan
In an area of bustling foot traffic, mid-block passageways are the hidden jewels of the pedestrian environment. Click here for information on the mid-block passageways in Times Square, and the opportunities they offer for public art, dining, and avoiding the crowds.
