It should be no surprise that Times Square sees some of the heaviest foot traffic in all of New York City. The Times Square automated counting system – phased in between August 2011 and September 2012 – provides 24/7/365 data on the number of pedestrians who enter and pass through specific counting zones of the Times Square Bowtie (7th and Broadway between 42nd and 47th). This data allows us to currently estimate that 350,000 pedestrians enter the heart of Times Square each day.
Below are monthly pedestrian maps showing the total counts and trends captured by our new system.
2013:
2012:
Additional cameras phased in in March and September.
2011:
First pilot cameras only.
Before the automated counting system, the Alliance used to perform bi-annual hand counts of pedestrians throughout the district. Click the links below to access this pedestrian data, which covers 2006-2010.
